Server |
A server is a powerful computer that holds your web site so that lots of people can view your site at the same time from their own computer. You make your site on your computer and transfer it to the server when you are ready for people to see your pages. |
Computer Network |
A Network is where computers are joined together allowing them to share files, printers etc and communicate together e.g. by using Email. The computer you use to store your web site must be on a network or no one will be able to see your site. |
Local Area Network |
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network which covers a small geographical area, such as a single building (the network you use in school is a LAN). |
Wide Area Network |
A Wide Area Network covers a large geographical area (such as across a city or a country). The Internet is an example of a WAN. The diagram shows a file being moved from A to B, making use of the telephone wires as many WANs do. |
