The Modern Factory

Design of the Modern Factory
When a factory introduces an automated system the entire layout has to be redesigned to suit the machines rather than poeple who work in them. Some things to consider are:
  • The location of the stationary robots
  • The paths for the mobile robots
  • The installation of the cabling
  • Safety zones
  • The number, type and location of the computer systems

Some things people need, but robots don't
  • Heating: Robots can work all day without being affected by the cold.
  • Canteens, loos and rest rooms.
  • Quiet conditions: Robots are not affected by noise.
  • Light: Robots don't need light and can work in the dark. This has led to 'Lights out factories'
In automated factories, the few maintenance and control technicians could be confined to a heated and sound proofed control room .

Safety Systems
Safety is important, especially when robots are being used. They can be very dangerous and precautions have to be taken.
  • Covering the moving parts so no one gets hurt when they operating the machine.
  • Marking the area around stationary robots with:
    • bright yellow markings to warn people of danger.
    • Use lots of signs.
  • Fitting mobile robots with:
    • Sirens, and
    • lights to warn people when they are moving about.
  • Programming mobile robots to move slowly people to get out of the way.
  • Use sensors on mobile robots to get them to stop instantly when they bump into something.

VIDEO 1
Shows automated production systems at the Linn factory working at high speed, emphasising their accuracy and adaptability. Also shows mobile robots and guidance systems in action together with sensors.

VIDEO 2
Show how automated systems in Aberdeen deal easily with reptitive tasks and demonstrates some other sensors.

VIDEO 3
Shows how automated control systems are used in dangerous places and rely on sensors to provide them with information.

VIDEO 4
Desmonstrates virtual reality (VR) and the advantages of using VR in the design of buildings and cars

VIDEO 5
Shows intelligent robots working with sensors operating indepedently from human control and capable of making its own descisions.

Exercise
1. A salesman is trying to sell a mobile robot to a factory owner. The factory owner hesitates because the robots are very expensive to buy. What could the salesman say to convince him that the investment would be worthwhile?
2. What training would people require to work alongside the mobile robots and robot arms in the Linn factory?
3. What safety measures would you put in place (a) around a stationary robot? (b) on and around a mobile robot?
