Linking Files

A great advantage to using integrated packagaes and application suites is that you can link one type of file to another. There are two ways of doing this.

Static Linkage between files

You can set up static links between files. If the link is static it means that, unlike a dynamic link, when you change the data in one file, the linked file would not automatically update. The user would have to intervene and carry out the update.

Static Link

An example where this would be useful, would be if you a historcal reports of sales and you didn't want the graphs to change as you made new sales.

Dynamic Linkage between files

A Dynamic Link means that when you change the data in one file, the file linked to it is automatically updated.

Dynamic Link

In the integration example the report on class progress could be linked dynamically to the graph in the main report document.

When the result data is changed, the graph would change automatically.

What you have to do!

Either in a new Word Document or in your Brain. Under a Main Heading 'Linking Files' complete the following tasks.
  1. Explain the difference between Static and Dynamic file linkage.
  2. Give a situation where you might want to use:
    1. Dynamic linkage.
    2. Static linkage.

What you should now be able to do!
