Data Misuse Act
A lot of sensitive information is stored on computers and the law makes damaging a computer system by hacking into it illegal and
subject to penalties. For example it is illegal to:
- Gain unauthorised access to a computer system (hacking)
- Make unauthorised
modifications to computer
materials.
What is modifying computer
material? It means:
- Damaging a computer
system by inserting a virus
- Preventing authorised access by changing or deleting passwords
- Making unauthorised changes to software or data.
Penalties!
Up to five years’ imprisonment and fines.
Young or old: There are no exceptions
