8. Memory (RAM & ROM)

The Main Memory is linked to the processor and holds data and programs while the computer is switched on. The size of the main memory is judged by the number of storage locations available to the computer system. - see memory management .

There are two types of memory.

1. Random Access Memory (RAM)

CPU
  1. Connected to the CPU, RAM memory holds data and programs while the computer is switched on.

  2. It takes the form of integrated circuits that allow the stored data to be accessed in any order or at random

  3. RAM memory is also known as volatile memory. When the computer is switch off, everything is lost from RAM memory, so make sure you save your work regularly.

2. Read Only Memory (ROM)

Heat Sink

ROM memory is known as non-volatile memory in that it retains its contents when the computer is switched off. It mostly contains the basic instructions or program that tells the computer what to do when its switched on, for example the BIOS program ( Basic Input Output System).

The BIOS program runs from the ROM chip when the computer 'boots up'. Because these instructions are stored on ROM memory chips, they are also known as firmware.

What you have to do!

In your Word document or your Brain complete the following exercises.

  1. Name the two types of memory.
  2. Explain why it is important to save your work regularly.
  3. What does the BIOS do?

What you should be able to do!

  1. Name the two different types of memory.

  2. Describe the differences between each type of memory.

  3. Describe what the BIOS does.
